White Tank Mountains, AZ (photo cred Ryan Anderson)
Hi there. I currently study subduction zones and am working on several projects trying to characterize material transfer, heat and fluid processes across shallow portions of the Costa Rica and New Zealand margins.

I get at these problems by collecting, processing and interpreting 2D and 3D seismic reflection and multibeam bathymetry data. These tools scale with technology and do an extraordinary job of imaging the seafloor and subseafloor structure, among other things. It is unreal what we can see by driving boats around in circles and pinging the depths below.

I switched to the offshore world following several years of old school boots-on-the-ground geologic mapping in extensional and transtensional terranes, characterizing the structural controls of geothermal systems. These years gave me a very tangible sense of faults and strata, minerals and sediments, and the temporal and spatial scales at which geological processes occur.
